Five for Friday – June 23, 2023

We all made it through another week. That’s all. We survived. Here’s some stuff I found while we were surviving.

  • Aahhh – something I could (and may) write about a lot. One person’s take on Microsoft’s Shitty Stack System
  • Speaking of my writing, I don’t think it’s a secret that I use AI for images on my substack posts. Yes, I know it’s derivative and it takes away work from artists (or not, since the alternate is no pictures). Brent and I have talked at length about this on the podcast. This week, Matt Schellhas writes about a similar experience here – The Anti-Hero Photo
  • Jesper Ottosen wrote a great article this week called Don’t Overthink Test Cases.
  • I planned on linking to a John Cutler article before Jesper linked to one of his tweets, but felt it was worth calling out the coincidence. John’s article this week on Explicit vs. Implicit Strategy is excellent and timely
  • I’m very happy to be in a fully remote work-wherever-I-want role. At the same time, it’s fascinating to see that Seattle is a ghost town compared to 2019. Companies want people back – but for the wrong reasons. Anyway – here’s an article from the Seattle times on the subject – Return to office in Seattle and beyond enters the desperation phase

Thanks for reading – have a great weekend,

The fine folks at the Ministry of Testing keep promoting my blog posts, so the least I can do is give them a link and a shout out. I’m looking forward to talking about “Testing without Testers” at Test Bash Philadelphia (preview here) and about my role on the team. This morning, I passively listened…

  • Greetings from HYD

I’m in Hyderabad, India this week to meet with some of our team and to give a handful of presentations at an internal conference. The weather is wonderful this week – it’s warm during the day and cool at night. I got to the hotel around 2:00am Tuesday morning, but got a few hours of…

  • The Mojo of the Weasel

It’s been a heck of a year. I joined a new team at MS fourteen months ago, and it’s been the busiest fourteen months of my career. To be fair, I worked more hours during my stint in Xbox One, but the role I’m in now has even more responsibility (more on what that means…

  • It’s a Beautiful Day

I may have mentioned this on the old blog, but I’m pretty sure I haven’t mentioned it here yet. O’Reilly media recently released Beautiful Testing – a collection of essays from a variety of testing professionals (including yours truly). I received my copy over the weekend (much to the annoyance, I’m sure, of several other…

  • The truth about meetings

I’ve been talking about meetings recently at work (I’m still giddy that have far fewer meetings to attend these days). I’ve had discussions about meetings for at least a decade, and they’re all about the same.People grumble about ineffective meetings, while others grumble about too many meetings. Some grumble about who should be in the…
