Five for Friday – November 16, 2018

I think I’m at about a year of this experiment of sharing 5 things I found interesting every week. I still like it, and hope you have found at least a few interesting links here over the past year.

  • I’ve been reading Five Stars: The Communication Secrets to Get from Good to Great (I’m also reading a few other things, and I really need to stop the habit of reading several books at once). It makes the point that communication and storytelling are critical to self-development.
  • Here is a highly (and sadly) accurate list of the 7 Habits of Highly Ineffective Managers.
  • Interesting article from Greg Paciga on Rethinking Velocity.
  • Unity won an Emmy for Baymax Dreams. I’m in no way connected to the work, but still very proud.
  • As I type this, the bookshelf behind me contains hundreds of Marvel comics – most from when I read and collected in the 1970s and 1980s. As I’m sure everyone knows, Stan Lee died this week. His work remains a huge part of my life, and while I know a lot of people know him mainly for his cameos in Marvel movies, his greatest cameo is more likely his appearance in all of our lives.

I had one of those meditative weekends, where between solving Advent of Code challenges, seeing the new Star Wars movie, and cleaning my home office, some ideas (sort of) merged in my head. I’ve been thinking / talking a lot about culture recently. This quote from Radical Candor (which I just read for the third time) seemed relevant.“The most amazing thing…

This FfF is slightly later in the day than normal due to the Seattle snow-pocalypse. I drove my daughter home from an appointment this afternoon. It was snowing, the roads were mostly wet, but it took almost 3 hours to drive twelve miles mostly because people were being stupid. Please, Seattle area readers, read this Now…

  • What’s Your Super Power?

When I’m interviewing experienced candidates (for any software role), one question I frequently ask is, “What’s your super power?” I like hearing answers like, “I can learn new things really quickly”, or “I’ve found over 1000 security bugs”, or even “I’m a batch file (or other language) wizard”. Recognizing super (or special) powers in yourself…

It’s a sort-of-sunny day in the Pacific northwest, and I have the day off from work (which probably means I’m cleaning the garage today. Here are some links to ponder from my recent browser history. Camille Fournier posted a wonderful (and incomplete) list of skills senior engineers need, beyond coding Lisi Hocke wrote a wonderful…
