Strategy Thoughts – Resources

Thanks to everyone who attended today’s brief web seminar. I’ll try anther one in a few weeks (topic suggestions are all welcome).

Here is the video – audio tends to fade at some points (I’m investigating root cause), but hopefully it’s somewhat useful. Remember – this is my approach to (what I call) strategy – not a template that you need to follow to create your own. I hope you find some nuggets you can use.

In HWTSAM, we (Ken, actually) talked a bit about tester DNA – that bit of mental goo that makes some people better (or at least more prone to being) testers. As I’ve been talking to (potential) testers lately, I’ve had a chance to dwell on this a bit more. What is it that makes a…

  • HWTSAM–Five Years Later

Five years ago this week, How We Test Software at Microsoft hit the shelves. The book has done well – both in sales, and in telling the story of how Microsoft approaches software testing. An unfortunate aspect of writing a book like this is that after five years, most of the book is obsolete. Sure,…

  • Quick Testing Challenge

Some updates and clarification below. And a NEW HINT below too Recently, I was discussing the diagnostic, debugging, and troubleshooting aspects of software testing, and this morning, while playing with Visual Studio 2012, I created a quick little exercise where the solution relies on these skills. This zip file contains an app (theapp.exe), and the…

I’d like to announce my candidacy for…no – not that kind of politics, I thought I’d drop a few comments on office politics. Too often, people see “politics” as the evil underbelly of the corporate world, and that competency in office politics requires that you can backstab your coworkers with no remorse, find a variety…

Five for Friday – October 13

Inspired by Tim Ferris, and more recently, Marcus Purvis (Five Share Friday), I too am going to start sharing five interesting-to-me ideas or links every Friday. Until/unless I forget. Here goes this week’s list. I’ve been reading a lot (a LOT) of management books recently. Last week, I completed Debugging Teams, and recommend it. I found…

  1. Alan, thanks for your talk. It was useful and interesting (I especially liked your colourful slides).
    I have a few questions:
    1. Each action (even the tiniest one) taken in an organization should contribute to the organization’s objectives positively. How does the test strategist ensure that each step outlined in the test strategy maps to the organization’s objectives and ultimately to its vision?
    2. Implementing a test strategy in a sizeable team is no mean task. Other than piloting actions and showing supporting data to other team members, what are the ways to smoothen the implementation of a test strategy?
    3. How does the test strategist know that they have arrived and it is time for the next strategy?

I have summarized what I heard you present first and then provided my opinions on the questions above on my link. Would love to find out your thoughts on these questions.

Thanks again and look forward to more sesssions. Keep up this good work.
