Strategy Thoughts – Resources

Thanks to everyone who attended today’s brief web seminar. I’ll try anther one in a few weeks (topic suggestions are all welcome).

Here is the video – audio tends to fade at some points (I’m investigating root cause), but hopefully it’s somewhat useful. Remember – this is my approach to (what I call) strategy – not a template that you need to follow to create your own. I hope you find some nuggets you can use.

I meant to post this a few days ago, but I just passed my one-year anniversary on the Lync (formerly Office Communicator) team. I enjoyed my time in the engineering excellence team at Microsoft, but I didn’t realize how much I missed being part of a software team until, well – a year or so…

  • Riffing on the Quadrants

In 2003, Brian Marick introduced the concept of “Agile Quadrants” to describe the scope of testing[1] (later expanded on by Lisa Crispin and Janet Gregory[2]). Several people (including me) have expanded and elaborated on the quadrants to describe the scope and activities of testing. Here’s a version of the testing quadrants. One challenge I’ve seen…

  • Five for Friday – January 25, 2019

A little late today, but still worth sharing… I’m currently re-reading (for at least the fifth time) Jerry Weinberg’s Secret of Consulting. It remains one of the best books I’ve read on leadership. A nice summary of what it means to take ownership in software. Ownership explained for Engineers and Managers From the “hits too…

  • The Test Test

I am always frustrated and somewhat sad when I hear testers whine or complain that they are not treated fairly; or that they are not respected; or that their development peers look down on them. I’ve been sitting on this post for many months wondering if I should post it or not when this thread…

  1. Alan, thanks for your talk. It was useful and interesting (I especially liked your colourful slides).
    I have a few questions:
    1. Each action (even the tiniest one) taken in an organization should contribute to the organization’s objectives positively. How does the test strategist ensure that each step outlined in the test strategy maps to the organization’s objectives and ultimately to its vision?
    2. Implementing a test strategy in a sizeable team is no mean task. Other than piloting actions and showing supporting data to other team members, what are the ways to smoothen the implementation of a test strategy?
    3. How does the test strategist know that they have arrived and it is time for the next strategy?

I have summarized what I heard you present first and then provided my opinions on the questions above on my link. Would love to find out your thoughts on these questions.

Thanks again and look forward to more sesssions. Keep up this good work.
