Five for Friday – November 2, 2018

I’m getting to a stage in my career where I’m beginning to realize that some of my biggest growth happens when I’m doing nothing but thinking.

But, I did leave my head a few times this week and found a few interesting things to share.

  • Quote I’m thinking about: “A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.” – Ayn Rand
  • If you’re reading this in the US, please vote. If you’re not in a mail-to-vote state (or even if you are), there’s likely relevant information here
  • This article that asks, Is it time to bring data to managing? brought back a few memories of the awful performance management at msft – along with some reasonable ideas on doing better.
  • Also on the leadership front is this article on leading with love (actual title is less fluffy). It reminds me of the care personally aspect of Radical Candor, which is something I continually try to do better.
  • I love solving debugging mysteries and figuring out those WTF moments in software. I found this article on debugging an AWS issue that was fun to follow. One punchline – “Why Amazon S3 returns two different errors for the same problem is beyond me, but that’s not important here.

I’m back at the job after a long break (including a month vacationing in Australia – trip report coming). I spent a chunk of time after the Xbox One ship figuring out what the next step in my software career was going to be. In the days up to the Xbox One launch, I hinted…

I’m in the middle of little project for work (one of many things I have going on these days), and I was reminded of the fact that we don’t have anything close to a consistent language in testing. It’s nothing new – I blogged about this subject before, but I still don’t have a reasonable…

  • Rockin’ STAR West

The cat’s out of the bag – I’m popping out of my no-conference bubble, and making an appearance at a testing conference (STAR West in October). The theme of the conference is “Be a Testing Rock star”, and while I think that theme begs for an appearance from Michael Larsen, I’ll do my best to…

  • TestBash Smash

Short story is that TestBash may be my new favorite testing conference. Great venue (no, fantastic venue), well-organized, and excellent variety and diversity across the different presentations. I was reflecting while walking the streets of Philadelphia this morning and realized that almost every talk was experiential – filled with stories of problem solving and discovery. For those who…

  • The SDET Pendulum

At a recent internal forum, I hosted a panel discussion comprised of “senior” level testers at Microsoft. The panel was evenly split between managers and non-managers and we took random questions from the audience on career paths in test. The testers in the panel had experience ranging from 11 to 24 years in test. Some…
