Five for Friday – March 3, 2023

I think I may have actually had a pretty good week. Some things fell into order, and I feel almost…rested. Here are a few links to get your week going.

  • Something I’ve been thinking about a lot myself amidst the insurgence of Developer/Engineer Productivity teams (and numerous posts on linkedin). What Is Developer Productivity? explores this topic.
  • In a not-so-surprising article (for me, at least), a study showed that Nearly 40% of software engineers will only work remotely. Now to get more of the industry CEOs to read this article…
  • I’ve been reading The Advice Trap by Michael Bungay Stanier (author of The Coaching Habit). It’s a great sequel, and extremely practical. If you lead via coaching, I highly recommend this.
  • I bought a new laptop this week. I ran linux on my desktop for ~5 years before defaulting to using my work Macbook pro and my phone. I was going to build a new desktop machine, but decided to try a laptop from System 76. They specialize in linux laptops, and I mostly love my new Pangolin. It currently has a weird hardware issue with the power supply, but hopefully I’m back here next week to rave about their support.
  • Finally (for the locals), I had a chance to catch up with an old friend last night at the Side Hustle Taproom in Kirkland (with more locations coming). Great idea for a place to showcase local beers.

Thanks for reading – see you next week.

  • Some Principles

I’ve been thinking a lot less about testing activities lately, and much, much more on how we to make higher quality software in general. The theme is evident from my last several blog posts, but I’m still figuring out exactly what that means for me. What it boils down to, is a few principles that…

  • Why Office Communicator?

Since announcing my pending job change, several people have asked me, “why did you choose the Office Communicator group for your next position?” The answer is also part of the internal talk I’m giving this week on career tips, so I thought I’d share it here. One of my favorite things about Microsoft is the…

  • My End at Microsoft

It’s been exactly a year now since I left Microsoft (and a week away from my one-year anniversary at Unity). I (abstractly) dumped my feelings on the move a year ago in The Breakup, and posted a few thoughts and reflections in my first few months at Unity (Forty Days In, Why Unity, Musings on…

    Five for Friday – April 6, 2018

Quote I’m pondering – “When there is trust, conflict becomes nothing but the pursuit of truth, an attempt to find the best possible answer.” I’ve been re-reading (in pieces), The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni. I love all of his writing, but this (his only non-fiction book) has so much great information on organizational health that…

  • Ur doin it rong

I’d like to offer a bit of advice for everyone in the world (but especially to software testers). In just about every thing you do, every day of your life, it is possible to do something wrong. My challenge to you is to think deeply about how you can do things “right”. Some examples: If…

  • More on careers

I left out a couple of obvious things in my career post yesterday and thought I’d write them down before I forgot. Managers Yesterday, I wrote about the non-management career path for testers at MS. There is, indeed, a career path for managers – I just tend to talk about the non-management career path because…
